Summary: It began in 2002.

Art lives in Poznan, Poland; Thibaut lives in Paris, France.
They both submitted their images to photo websites. When one begins to take photos they feel a need to know what other people think of their work.

Very soon Art and Thibaut began to comment on each other’s images and realized that their work related to the other’s; they realized that there was a connection between their images. They began to converse for hours about technique, the meaning of photography, and the meaning of life.

In 2008, they felt a strong desire to share their images with the world by creating the extraordinary object -an album – with their photo works that combines in a very poetical way the lost symmetry of their souls. So this work is by two people who have never met but who wanted to collaborate in an artistic and thoughtful manner.

In these times of fast and superficial contacts between people, they want to return to something more concrete. This book is a tactile version of the internet and of the websites where they used to post images. It can be said, of course, the benefits of technology are arguable, but it is a positive thing when it leads two people to a collaboration such as this.

The Indie Photobook Library is TWO!

This past weekend, the Indie Photobook Library celebrated its 2nd Anniversary. Thank you to all the photographers/artists/bookmakers that have made the collection what it is today! I’d also like to thank Advisory Board members Darius Himes, Andy Adams, Shane Lavalette, and Gabe Reed and all the venues that have welcomed the iPL. In the last two years, the collection has grown to almost 1000 books. The iPL continues to promote and showcase the books in the collection through international pop-up and feature-length exhibitions, articles, conferences, guest lectures, and also preserves them as a non-circulating public library. Having a specific collection dedicated to this contemporary movement in publishing allows for the development of future discourse on trends in self-publishing, the ability to reflect on and compare books in the collection, and for scholarly research to be conducted years, decades, and centuries to come. I am looking forward to continuing the iPL mission.

Cheers,
Larissa Leclair
