Summary: The Set of Ice Boxes had to me made after Cynthia had shot over 100 ice
machines across the US, and Australia. Her friend said, “Why don’t you do
BOX OF ICE BOXES”. With a title like that, the project had to be made.
She designed and had a box specifically made for a set of 22 Ice Machines
postcards. These were made in 2001. The framed Ice Machine photographs
debuted in 1999 at Milky World Gallery in Seattle. The “Box of Ice Boxes”
was made in 2001, as the Ice Machines continued to be exhibited, the
postcards sold along with them. In 2003, larger 16 X 20 prints of the Ice
Machines were made. 20 of these were curated by Aaron Rose and Christian
Strike to be in the “Beautiful Losers” exhibit which opening in March 2004
at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. Included in this exhibit
were “ephermera” the artists had created in their lives. All of the
above postcards, along with the book, BANNED IN DC are part of this
exhibit, and some of these images are in the “Beautiful Losers” book.
The exhibit continues to tour with two European dates in the summer and
fall of 2008.

The Indie Photobook Library is TWO!

This past weekend, the Indie Photobook Library celebrated its 2nd Anniversary. Thank you to all the photographers/artists/bookmakers that have made the collection what it is today! I’d also like to thank Advisory Board members Darius Himes, Andy Adams, Shane Lavalette, and Gabe Reed and all the venues that have welcomed the iPL. In the last two years, the collection has grown to almost 1000 books. The iPL continues to promote and showcase the books in the collection through international pop-up and feature-length exhibitions, articles, conferences, guest lectures, and also preserves them as a non-circulating public library. Having a specific collection dedicated to this contemporary movement in publishing allows for the development of future discourse on trends in self-publishing, the ability to reflect on and compare books in the collection, and for scholarly research to be conducted years, decades, and centuries to come. I am looking forward to continuing the iPL mission.

Cheers,
Larissa Leclair
