Summary: Arlington, Virginia, is geographically the smallest county in the United States. But it has one of the most diverse populations in the country, making it a unique arena for exploring how we see ourselves, how we see others and how “They” see us. Because we all have biases and tend to identify with our particular “tribe,” or “tribes,” it is easy to forget that we are all a “They” to someone else.
As an artist interested in perception and transforming perceptions, I have created a series of images to hold a mirror up to prejudice and discrimination. Both the portraits and text panels are designed to encourage us to set aside our stereotypes and projections and to actively see ourselves in “the They” As Haitian-American poet so eloquently puts it, “…Because my people are your people in disguise.”
