Summary: The Amsterdam photographer Peter van de Wijngaart went to New York for half a year to search for memorable places and moments. He captured them in New York Minutes, photographs of 60 seconds.

A minute’s silence on 11 September, athletes of the New York Marathon racing by and the crisis at Wall Street. A ‘New York Minute’ is a common term in the United States and far beyond, New York being a symbol of the hectic city life, in which the entire world passes by in one single minute. This is a stereotype image of New York, because there is certainly room for peace and quiet in all the hectic. In the book 60 New York minutes are shown: a full hour New York.

The prominent moments and places of New York are given a chance but at the same time the daily life is not forgotten. An outsider who is visiting does not see the moments and places. It is a glance from the inside, from someone who, even temporarily, is an inhabitant of New York. This presents impressive images giving someone a feeling of being part of it, to be in the middle of the New York Minute.

The Indie Photobook Library is TWO!

This past weekend, the Indie Photobook Library celebrated its 2nd Anniversary. Thank you to all the photographers/artists/bookmakers that have made the collection what it is today! I’d also like to thank Advisory Board members Darius Himes, Andy Adams, Shane Lavalette, and Gabe Reed and all the venues that have welcomed the iPL. In the last two years, the collection has grown to almost 1000 books. The iPL continues to promote and showcase the books in the collection through international pop-up and feature-length exhibitions, articles, conferences, guest lectures, and also preserves them as a non-circulating public library. Having a specific collection dedicated to this contemporary movement in publishing allows for the development of future discourse on trends in self-publishing, the ability to reflect on and compare books in the collection, and for scholarly research to be conducted years, decades, and centuries to come. I am looking forward to continuing the iPL mission.

Cheers,
Larissa Leclair
