Summary: Derived from a local legend, the männele is a traditional Alsacian pastry that is only found in bakeries at Christmas time. Their making comes from one tradition, in homage to a tale without images. But after four years of seeing them pop up with winter in the region, what struck me was the variety of interpretations, applications of one single concept. These hand made pastries are presented in a variety of shapes that make each item a different interpretation of the original tale. And each one of them is true. They are all equally valid, as monstrous as some may seem. There can be no hierarchy, no interpretation can be closer to the original, as there is none, but only a concept living in each of our minds. Only exists different levels of tradition.
On each spread are shown two männele from a same bakery. There are twenty männele in total, coming from ten bakeries.
