Summary: Born in eastern Serbia is the site of one of the largest copper mines in Europe. Run by the Bor Mining and Smelting Works (RTB), the massive works produces copper (gold, silver and palladium as well) through electrolytic refining. Since the mid-1990s and during the time of sanctions on the Federal Republic Yugoslavia production in this mine dropped significantly from the very prosperous 1970s and 1980s. Copper mining is the key basis of Bor’s economy and the effects of decreased production can be seen all over the town. The number of residents has dropped since air pollution has caused many people to leave. A source of wealth for more than a century as home to one of Europe’s largest copper mines is in decline. Though, Serbia’s Bor has struggled for years to attract foreign investment. The inability to obtain new equipment, technology and heal its soiled environment is striking. Bor is the most polluted town in the West Balkans where due to the outdated technology the concentration of the sulphur dioxide is the highest in Europe. The future of Bor, important for the wider economy in the European Union applicant country, remains a big question mark. While working in Bor, I learned copper mining is still the key basis of it’s economy. Despite growing unemployment, increasing population and awareness of the effects of air pollution amongst the citizens, RTB industry and Bor are strongly connected by generations of families who came here to work and live and still do until this day.

The Indie Photobook Library is TWO!

On May 13, 2012, the Indie Photobook Library celebrated its 2nd Anniversary. Thank you to all the photographers/artists/bookmakers that have made the collection what it is today! I’d also like to thank Advisory Board members Darius Himes, Andy Adams, Shane Lavalette, and Gabe Reed and all the venues that have welcomed the iPL. In the last two years, the collection has grown to almost 1000 books. The iPL continues to promote and showcase the books in the collection through international pop-up and feature-length exhibitions, articles, conferences, guest lectures, and also preserves them as a non-circulating public library. Having a specific collection dedicated to this contemporary movement in publishing allows for the development of future discourse on trends in self-publishing, the ability to reflect on and compare books in the collection, and for scholarly research to be conducted years, decades, and centuries to come. I am looking forward to continuing the iPL mission.

Cheers,
Larissa Leclair
