Summary: On September 22, 2011 I had the opportunity to document a house in Plattekill, NY that had been reported to the Ulster County SPCA as having feral cats living in it by the new owner of the house. The situation appeared to be an extreme example of animal hoarding and neglect. This series of photos documents the interior of the house, but cannot begin to describe the smell and oppressive feeling of being in the space. It was apparent that at least one person was living in this house with over 30 cats, as there was fresh milk and food in the refrigerator. The entire house was filled with garbage, feces, mold and the intense and highly concentrated smell of ammonia and rotting organic matter. Most of the garbage bags seen in the photos are completely filled with cat feces. After my initial reactions of horror, anger and disgust, I found myself feeling pity and sadness for whomever was living under these conditions; human and animal alike. As of the publishing date of this book no one has been identified or apprehended for any crime related to charges of animal cruelty; the investigation is ongoing.

Summary: Some urban planners have argued that parking garages destroy the architectural assets of urban cores.
Parking lots and garages displace street-level shops, office space and cultural centers.
Those complaints may be true, but I have found unexpected visual joy in parking garages.
They offer an urban version of the hikes and sublime views that lead me to the Adirondack mountains.
I climb the stairwells to the top decks, often photographing multiple garages in one outing.
The roofs offer unusual views of nearby buildings and far-off valleys and hills.
The tops of garages are places of surprising beauty and calm.

Summary: Confections

The Confections series began as a response to turning 30. It was a celebration of birthdays, color, pattern and obsessive absurdity. My original idea was to bake 30 birthday cakes for myself and photograph them. I didn’t quite make it to 30 cakes in time for my thesis show, but I sure got a lot of ideas from those first cakes. I ordered a kit from Martha Stewart.com and watched an instructional video on decorating cakes. When I quickly discovered my cakes were never going to look like the ones in the video and the pamphlet, I decided they were better off in their exuberantly imperfect states.
Cakes are the centerpieces of celebrations and symbolic trophies evoking nostalgia and awe. Historically, cake has played a significant role in women’s lives. Women have used cake as both an outlet of creativity and a symbol of female power politics. The woman who made the best cake held a certain power over the other women in the community, according to Sherrie Inness in Cooking Lessons: The Politics of Gender and Food.
Six years later, this series has evolved into less about birthdays and more of a humorous feminist criticism. In my constructions of these photographs, I am commentating on not only cake itself as a rich cultural symbol, but of the domestic fantasy world of contemporary home decorating and cooking magazines and television shows. It’s a fantasy world where entertaining, cooking and decorating unite. It’s a place where one needs to have a beautiful home, decorated seasonally, in order to entertain friends with gourmet meals and elaborately concocted desserts.
My email subscription to Martha Stewart Craft of the Day has inspired much of the background props in the newer Confections (adorned) series. Most everything in these backgrounds is also handmade, with the exception of found antiques.

Summary: Murmures, is a project finalized after a trip we did beginning of 2011 in Budapest. The book is a visual poem where fragments of a city are brought together to depict a double vision of a personal experience. Things are partially shown and people are suggested by their absence, allowing the spectator to construct his own narration.

Summary: Our latest publication features a selection of found photographs curated by Robert E. Jackson from his extensive collection of vintage snapshots. Having been actively collecting for well over a decade, Jackson is a superb example of one who collects not merely to accumulate, but to seek out, arrange & ultimately form the images he finds into groupings that make statements about photography & culture at large. In Pure Photography, Jackson provides visual evidence of the uncanny manner in which snapshot photography isolates aspects of the world in a way the human eye alone cannot. “Some alchemy of chance,” Jackson writes, “a misreading of surface detail, a mechanical error within the camera, or emulsion issues have caused these photographs to exist outside the standard notion of what a snapshot is meant to be. Being pure in the sense that they are visually unencumbered by a photographic intent which can be easily understood, one must approach the photos from a personal point of view. As aesthetic objects which cannot be read in the traditional sense, they steadfastly recoil from interpretation & exist simply to be experienced.”
