Summary: Black Scabbard Research Centre takes its name from the Black Scabbard fish, a mysterious, grotesque looking species residing between 600 and 1600 metres below sea level in the waters surrounding Madeira Island in the North Atlantic Ocean.

I have great interest in islands, in their formation, the fact that their largest part is hidden underwater, the mythology associated to them, their geomorphology, their population and the distinctly and independently developed habits that sets them apart. I’m also drawn to the dark, obscure and mysterious side of island life.

This book came about when I was gathering information and references for a project. I started by digging through my personal archives and arranging content according to my desires and intentions on making a body of work happen. I also researched content that by chance was illustrated with images that spoke to me, so I started pairing them with my work.

This book presents original work as well as appropriated content from local newspaper clippings, video stills from local tv stations, images received via email by friends and family members, etc.

Some images were taken out of context, opening doors to new ways of interpreting them and making them seem more interesting and mysterious beyond their original depictive intentions. Original work is sometimes presented to look like found material and vice-versa.

The content is intentionally arranged to create a new narrative from seemingly disparate images.

The Indie Photobook Library is TWO!

This past weekend, the Indie Photobook Library celebrated its 2nd Anniversary. Thank you to all the photographers/artists/bookmakers that have made the collection what it is today! I’d also like to thank Advisory Board members Darius Himes, Andy Adams, Shane Lavalette, and Gabe Reed and all the venues that have welcomed the iPL. In the last two years, the collection has grown to almost 1000 books. The iPL continues to promote and showcase the books in the collection through international pop-up and feature-length exhibitions, articles, conferences, guest lectures, and also preserves them as a non-circulating public library. Having a specific collection dedicated to this contemporary movement in publishing allows for the development of future discourse on trends in self-publishing, the ability to reflect on and compare books in the collection, and for scholarly research to be conducted years, decades, and centuries to come. I am looking forward to continuing the iPL mission.

Cheers,
Larissa Leclair
