Summary: Byron Mack makes his living as a manager of a recording studio in Salem, a small college town in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia but on the weekends, he performs under the moniker Poe Mack. At 31 years old, Mack is veteran of local hip hop scene. Earlier this year he earned the attention of North Carolina based Grammy Award winning producer 9th Wonder, who has worked with Jay Z, Drake, and Outkast among others. As a result Mack was invited this past summer to be an opening act on the Mic Fest 2011 tour presented by JAMLA Records, 9th Wonder’s independent record label. The tour stretched over 8 weekends starting in June and ending in August, hitting venues along the east coast.
The following set of photographs are a diary of Mack’s tour stops, beginning in Roanoke, Virginia and ending in Atlanta, Georgia. Life on the road for Poe Mack consists of long solo drives, carrying his own bags, splitting hotel rooms, and hoping to cover his travel expenses from money earned by performing on tour.
